This Thanksgiving Throw Yourself and Your Family a Party

Tue, 11/20/2012 - 8:00pm -- Editor

I have never been a big one for ceremony, but I love Thanksgiving and gathering.  The holidays sometimes feel like this daunting day filling the calendar when in fact it is just another day, and one we should enjoy.

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday since it involves, hanging out with people I love, stopping for a moment to focus on what I am grateful for, and yes, let us not forget the food.

For about the past 12 years I have done a large pot luck Thanksgiving that has had a guest list of almost seventy people.  My rule is I will do the animal protein and each guest must bring their family specialty side.  I love this because most sides are labour intensive, we create a lot of diversity with this rule, and there is something special about eating a friends great grandmother's prized pie or potato dish.

Life is crazy enough so why do we want to ramp it up and tackle the beast?  I want to flow with the day and set it up in such a way that it's doable and I actually have some fun.  Imagine that?  I have thrown dinners where all I did was plan, prep, cook, execute, clean up, take a shower and head to bed.  Party for everyone else.  We are breaking that mold, and figuring out the way to have a bit of all of it.  Even some conversation with friends.  I can't help you with your drunk obnoxious Uncle, but I can remind you to navigate it all in a way that it becomes what it was meant to be about. No, not just stuffing your face with wine and pumpkin pie. Giving thanks and connecting with loved one's.

From my family to yours I wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving and may your lives be filled with love, health, joy, peace, and movement during this Holiday Season. I don't care how cold it is let's keep those bodies in motion.

Best, Gabby
